In many societies in Africa and in the Middle East being gay is a taboo. In these societies a gay man faces prejudice, discrimination and even he can be ostracized. I have seen many people take their lives because they can not cope with the prejudice. This intolerance goes on despite the fact that homosexuality has been practised in these societies since time immemorial.
